This is a list of English-Portuguese regressions. It is a work in progress

Not so simple tests

We have to infer gender and number of an adjective from the subject sometimes.

• (en) He is smart. → Ele é esperto.
• (en) He is a doctor. → Ele é um médico.
• (en) She is smart. → Ela é esperta.
• (en) They are smart. → Eles são espertos.
• (en) We are smart. → Nós somos espertos.
• (en) They are smart girls. → Elas são garotas espertas.

Negative

Long form

• (en) He is not a doctor. → Ele não é um médico.
• (en) He was not a doctor. → Ele não era um médico.
• (en) He will not be a doctor → Ele não será um médico
• (en) He would not be a doctor → Ele não seria um médico
• (en) He shall not be a doctor → Ele não deverá ser um médico
• (en) I do not smoke → Eu não fumo
• (en) He does not smoke → Ele não fuma
• (en) He did not smoke → Ele não fumou
• (en) He can not smoke → Ele não pode fumar
• (en) Dogs do not think. → Cachorros não pensam.

Contracted form

• (en) He isn't a doctor → Ele não é um médico
• (en) He wasn't a doctor → Ele não era um médico
• (en) He won't be a doctor → Ele não será um médico
• (en) He wouldn't be a doctor → Ele não seria um médico
• (en) I don't smoke → Eu não fumo
• (en) He doesn't smoke → Ele não fuma
• (en) He didn't smoke → Ele não fumou
• (en) He can't smoke → Ele não pode fumar

Questions

Verb tenses and conjugations

You

• (en) You play football. → Você joga futebol.
• (en) You(pl.) play football. → Vocês jogam futebol. (how do i deal with these ambiguities?)
• (en) You will play football. → Você jogará futebol.
• (en) You(pl.) will play football. → Vocês jogarão futebol.
• (en) You played football. → Você jogou futebol.
• (en) You(pl.) played football. → Vocês jogaram futebol.
• (en) You are going to play football. → Você vai jogar futebol.
• (en) You are playing football. → Você está jogando futebol.
• (en) You were playing football. → Você estava jogando futebol.

In addition to 2nd person plural ambiguity, in portuguese we can also use tu instead of você to translate you (sg.). Since tu has a different conjugation, while você uses 3rd person singular, AND is is the more common form, I think it is smart to use this form in generation. No form is really more formal than the other, AFAIK.
